Huckleberry Finn


Huckleberry Finn is a character in fictional stories created by Mark Twain Also known as Huck. This fictional character first appeared in a book called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He is also the narrator and the protagonist of the book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, who is a sequel to his appearance book.

Relationships

Huck and Tom Sawyer are two closest friends whose relationship grows much because of the lawyer’s emulation of Finn's freedom and his will do whatever he wants. Sawyer got whipping for his admiration of Finn by bragging to his teacher that he come to school late because he was having a chat with Huck and he enjoyed their conversation. Jim was a dominant friend in Huck’s life having befriended him since Jim was a runaway slave. Throughout the adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jim enables Huck to undergo his moral awakening in life. Pap Finn is the father of Huck is abusive and an alcoholic dad. He appears at the beginning of the adventures of Huckleberry Finn and he takes Huck using force to go and stay with him. His method of parental guiding seems abusive and to some extent he is jealous of his son that he thinks his son will end up living a better life than he did.

Criticism

The theme of language used throughout the book adventures of Huckleberry Finn continues to get criticism until today. Today most people things that the book centered on race. The controversy on whether Huck is racist or anti-racist led to an altered interpretation of the story. The novel has used a lot of the word "nigger" which has made a lot of the people to request that the book be banned from use in the U.S. public school system. In 2003, a grandmother and her grandson protested the use of the book in the school which her grandson was attending. Also, in 2009, attempts to get rid of the book by a school teacher was witnessed whereby he was citing that it has become difficult to teach the book due to the many offensive words that have been used in it. Publishers have also made their own initiative on trying to ease the controversy utilizing publishing fewer books in the market. Also, publishers have come up with a different edition of the book known as the hipster Huckleberry Finn which replaces the word "nigger" with "Hipster."
